BRWP Supports Local Action for Nuclear Safety

Post date: Jan 16, 2018 5:11:24 PM

Please join us if you can for the following upcoming events aimed at bringing about safe and responsible storage of radioactive waste instead of the crazy irresponsible plans the multinational consortium now running Chalk River Laboratories wants to carry out using our tax dollars!

January 18 in Ottawa, 11:00 am, Parliament Hill

The Red Canoe March for Nuclear Safety

The Anishinabek Tribal Council, Ottawa Riverkeeper, Concerned Citizens and STOP Oléoduc Outaouais are holding a press conference at 10:30 inside the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings. At 11:00 am, after the press conference, we will assemble at the bottom of the stairs to the main entrance of the Centre Block. We will accompany the red canoe on its route through downtown Ottawa. The march will be in two parts: 1) from the flame to Sparks st. Bank St, Laurier Avenue and along Laurier to City Hall, approx 1.4 kilometres. We expect to arrive at Ottawa City Hall at about 11:45 am. Part 2) from City Hall departing from there at around noon or 12:15, south on Elgin St. to Catherine McKenna's office on Catherine st. approx 1.4 kilometres. We will deliver letters to Mayor Watson and Minister McKenna, hear brief excerpts from the letters and some songs courtesy of the Ottawa Raging Grannies.

January 23-25 in Pembroke, Best Western Inn and Conference Centre

Public Hearing into the application by the consortium for a 10 year license to operate the Chalk River Laboratories

The agenda for this hearing is truly awesome! On very short notice, dozens of groups and individuals applied to intervene in this hearing. 80% of the oral intervenors raise serious concerns about the proposed 10-year term of the license, massive deletion of license conditions and compliance verification criteria recommended by Canada's "captured" nuclear regulator, corruption on the part of consortium members and other issues. Please come out and support our intervenors!! Click here for the agenda, showing when all of our intervenors and concerned colleagues will be speaking, so you can plan your visit.

Call to action everyone!!

Please come to the hearing and, if you can, carry a canoe on the roof of your car, to which you have attached signs stating concerns about the hearing. We are aiming to fill the Best Western parking lot with canoes and signs, so as to make a strong statement to visiting media and others. Two quick suggestions for signs:

1) "CANOE believe it??? Our tax dollars are being wasted!!!"

2) CNSC do your job! Keep radioactive waste out of our air and water!

More ideas for signs will follow shortly; please send me yours!

If you can't bring a canoe, please consider attaching a sign to your aerial, or car windows.

More information will follow shortly. The January 18th Canoe March for Nuclear Safety is posted on Facebook. Please share widely.
